In romance, I really enjoy being immersed in subcultures, so my hope is that Meet Me in Madrid gives readers an insider’s view of the art worlds particular to Charlotte and Adrianna. But I like the kinds of questions around beauty and appearances and history and seduction that are sort of embedded in art whether we like it or not. ![]() It has very public, social sites, like museums, auction houses and galleries, but also more personal, even intimate spaces, like art studios, classrooms and offices. What makes the art world a good setting for a romance? We talked to Lowell about her warts-and-all portrayal of academia and the joys of gorgeous clothes and good food. Once reunited, the connection between the two women is electric, but they’ll have to grapple with diverging career goals and all the perils of long-distance dating before finding their happily ever after in Verity Lowell’s Meet Me in Madrid. When Charlotte Hilaire gets stranded in Madrid on a snowy winter night, she takes a chance and gets in touch with Adrianna Coates, a fellow art academic whom Charlotte was both intimidated by and attracted to during her grad school days. ![]() ![]() ![]() Three books centre on his eight-year residency inīurgeo, Newfoundland: The Rock within the Sea (1968) presents his seafaring neighbours as heroic because they are uncorrupted by modern technology The Boat Who Wouldn't Float (1969, ![]() ![]() The Regiment (1961) and And No Birds Sang (1979) deal with his experiences in the Second World War. ![]() ![]() He’d already been on his own for a year by then and in boot camp, at Aldershot Military Barracks, he’s befriended by a slightly older and much more confident young man named Will.Īlthough they come from very different backgrounds Tristan and Will share an instant connection. The Absolutist is the story Tristan Sadler, a young man of only 17 when he enlists in the Army in 1916. An absolutist was a man who would do nothing to further or support the war effort. I know about conscientious objectors in WWI and other wars, men who refuse to fight but will serve in other capacities. Have you heard of absolutists before? I hadn’t. And when I say ‘love story’ I do not mean ‘romance’ so don’t let that put you off. ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s a tragic love story unlike any other that I’ve read, yet it rings so absolutely true. It’s an epic World War I story that flows back and forth in time from 1919 to 1916, with a concluding chapter set in 1979. I love everything about this novel–the characters, the story, the time period, the writing style. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() So, if you fall in love with the characters, you know you have more books on the way! The Clearing is the first book in a series. In The Clearing, there is some lore about Wild Bill Hickok. In Haven, I wove the story of Giles Corey and the Salem with trials into the story. I generally try to find some weird historical fact that makes the supernatural aspects of my writing feel more believable. There are some factual bits of history included in the story. I believe this can have a positive impact on readers who may feel their own home life doesn’t “live up” to the portrayal of parent-child relationships in some books. The Clearing paints a more realistic picture of parents – humans with flaws, just like the kids in the stories. In a lot of YA books, parents are written as all-knowing, compassionate, intelligent, and even heroic. I have found this type of story can motivate readers to explore the source material, in this case the mystery surrounding the murder of Jeannette DePalma. ![]() ![]() While stories that feature “perfect” heroes can be fun, giving the readers two main characters who feel real can be much more satisfying to the YA audience. Hannah and Ashley are believable protagonists. ![]() |
