In The Clearing, there is some lore about Wild Bill Hickok. In Haven, I wove the story of Giles Corey and the Salem with trials into the story. I generally try to find some weird historical fact that makes the supernatural aspects of my writing feel more believable. There are some factual bits of history included in the story. I believe this can have a positive impact on readers who may feel their own home life doesn’t “live up” to the portrayal of parent-child relationships in some books. The Clearing paints a more realistic picture of parents – humans with flaws, just like the kids in the stories. In a lot of YA books, parents are written as all-knowing, compassionate, intelligent, and even heroic. I have found this type of story can motivate readers to explore the source material, in this case the mystery surrounding the murder of Jeannette DePalma. ![]() ![]() While stories that feature “perfect” heroes can be fun, giving the readers two main characters who feel real can be much more satisfying to the YA audience. Hannah and Ashley are believable protagonists. ![]()
